Description

This abstract painting depicts a circular garden formed by layered washes of magenta, indigo, deep blue, and rose. The colors bleed and merge organically, creating a sense of growth and movement rather than fixed structure. Around the circle, four motifs reference divine figures from Han Dynasty jade artifacts. These forms remain fragmented and partially submerged in the surface, appearing as traces rather than literal symbols.

Fine gold linework drift across the composition, echoing ancient decorative patterns. Subtle linear drawings suggest clouds, plants, and flowing currents, reinforcing the image of a living landscape.

At the center is a deliberate void, framed but left unpainted, containing a hierographic symbol meaning “opening an empty gate.” This absence becomes the focal point, anchoring the surrounding movement and emphasizing emptiness as an active, generative force. The work draws on early Chinese philosophical ideas, proposing that meaning arises as much from what is absent as from what is present.

The circular composition avoids narrative closure, inviting contemplation rather than interpretation. Balancing expressive color with restrained linework, the painting feels both contemporary and historically rooted. Ultimately, it suggests that transcendence emerges through attention, restraint, and openness, with the empty center becoming the most charged space of all.

This artwork was exhibited in the exhibition CONTEMPORARY VENICE 18th Edition 2026 in Venice, Italy.
