Description

Not in the Right Place explores the fragile boundary between order and meaning. Inspired by an ancient green and yellow jade deity pendant and a Qing Qianlong flower vase, this painting deliberately places objects in unfamiliar relationships. The deity figure, once possibly a ceremonial object symbolizing authority, spirituality, or divine power, is inserted into a flower vase rather than its presumed original setting. Around it, abstract flowers bloom freely outside the vessel, while traditional Chinese cloud motifs drift across the composition, dissolving the distinction between earthly objects and spiritual space.

The mysterious jade deity has fascinated scholars for decades. Carved on both sides to create a complete human face from either direction, its unusual features, prominent nose and bulging eyes, continue to inspire debate about its identity and purpose. Without a perforation for wearing, it is believed that the pendant may have been mounted on a ceremonial scepter or ritual object belonging to the highest social class. Yet its true function remains unknown.

Rather than reconstructing history, this work asks a different question: Does an object have a “correct” place simply because tradition tells us so?

Should flowers always belong inside a vase? Is a sacred artifact misplaced when it enters an ordinary object? Or does meaning change according to context and the viewer’s perspective?

The painting offers no definitive answer. Instead, it invites viewers to reconsider how cultural conventions shape our understanding of beauty, history, value, and belonging. Right and wrong are not fixed positions but perspectives formed through experience.
