Many people have heard the story of Qin Shi Huang sending Xu Fu to the east in search of the elixir of life. Although it is a legend, it clearly reflects the ancient Chinese people’s obsession with longevity.
The elixir of life that grants immortality certainly does not exist, so people incorporate their wishes for longevity into decorations that embellish various aspects of life. While the aesthetic appeal is one aspect, it also provides a significant psychological comfort. Traditional Chinese auspicious patterns are as splendid as a sea of stars, but the pattern that most directly represents people’s desire for longevity is the character for ‘longevity’ (寿). Throughout generations of character evolution, the strokes and form of the character ‘寿’ have been continuously improved, gradually transforming into a pattern that expresses a specific auspicious meaning, which is the widely used longevity character pattern.
